Tan Mom vs. Snooki

Only in America… Forget the showdown featuring working versus stay-at-home moms; that’s so 2008. The latest battle on the mommy war front pits Tan Mom in one corner and reality TV mom-to-be Snooki in the other. It’s a fake bake smackdown… and it’s giving motherhood a bad name. Working Together as Husband and Wife

Do you and your spouse work at the same place? This can be a lot of fun, or it can cause complications at work and at home. Let’s take a look at both sides of the equation. On the plus side, working at the same location gives the husband and wife the chance to spend more time together during the day. Even if they don’t work in the same department, chances are their paths will cross frequently throughout their shift, and they can eat lunch together and take breaks together. Working in the same facility also gives them something in … Continue reading

Outdoor vs. Indoor Workouts

I sometimes wonder whether I prefer indoor or outdoor workouts. Where I live, weather isn’t usually a major factor. I guess it depends on what my schedule is like, how motivated I am, and if I am working out with someone. Outdoor Workouts I enjoy outdoor workouts because I love fresh air. Hiking and biking are great ways to get moving and see the world around. Hiking especially is a passion of mine because I love nature, especially tress and animals. Biking I also enjoy because you can go far in a short time. Walking can be a convenient workout … Continue reading

Rent or Buy: Our experience with home ownership

We bought a home mainly because we were always told that we should… not because it was right for us, but because it was expected of us. We were told that home ownership is important for stability of your family, real estate is always a good investment, and that owning a home would be cheaper than renting. I actually have a friend who used to argue these points with me so vehemently that I can’t even have the discussion with him any more. I understand that owning a home can be a really good investment. But I also understand that … Continue reading

Society’s Perception: Moms vs. Dads

So much has been said and written about author Rahna Reiko Rizzuto’s decision to give up primary physical custody of her kids, so she could move to Japan to pursue her career—–most of it is far from flattering. Actually, most of it is scathing. In her book, “Hiroshima in the Morning,” Rizzuto explains why she “didn’t want to be a mother” anymore and what precipitated her decision to leave her husband and two young kids, so she could interview atomic bomb survivors in Japan. According to Rizzuto, she left her family for four months in order to complete research for … Continue reading

Working At Your Business vs Working On Your Business

If you are like many home-based professionals, you may spend a lot of time working at your home-based business while spending little time working on your home-based business. There is an important distinction between working at your business and working on your business, and both things are important to your continued success. When you are working at your business, you are doing the actual work that your customers or clients have asked you to do – writing the articles, selling the products, baking the cookies, or whatever it is that you do in your business. When you are working on … Continue reading

Interviews with Homeschoolers – Vickie Smith, Part Three

We’ve been talking with Vickie Smith, author of The Quiet Doll Queen and president of Ark Essentials Publishing, about her decision first to homeschool, and then to send her children back to public school. You can read part one here and part two here. Vickie, you mentioned that most of your children did very well acclimatizing back into a public school routine, but two of them did have some difficulty. Can you tell us about that? My fourth daughter started in public school- my first daughter to attend public kindergarten. She did well in kindergarten but struggled severely socially in … Continue reading

Frugality Vs Risk

I have two competing money styles going on in my life these days. One is a frugal streak a mile wide, although it seems to have diminished to half a mile these days. This frugal streak comes from my upbringing. My parents were not particularly frugal, but money was always an issue. I remember many concerns about money when I was growing up, so as a young adult, my response to this was to be as tight with money as I could possibly be. This was facilitated by the fact that I didn’t have much of it to begin with. … Continue reading
