Do I Use My Kids as an Excuse?

Family life and obligations can keep us from doing things that we really want to do; but it can also be a way of getting out of things we don’t want to do. Over the years, I have to confess that having three kids to tend to has given me an “out” plenty of times. Probably, more times, than I should comfortably admit. I find that as my children get older, however, and I get a little more confident and solid in the life I am living that I use my kids as an excuse less and less—but it is … Continue reading

Charitable Celebrities Bring Hope To Sick Children and Sick Celebrity Works On Getting Well

CHARTIABLE CELEBRITIES Who knew a love story about an accident-prone penguin keeper and an “everyman” could serve as the catalyst to aid sick children? Hard to believe, but it happened this week at a Knoxville, Tennessee movie theater. That’s where hundreds of fans gathered to greet Jessica Alba and Dane Cook during a screening of their new movie “Good Luck Chuck.” Local residents paid $75 a piece to see the actors and attend the screening of the new comedy, which opens to the general public today. The fundraiser raised $260,000 for Variety of Eastern Tennessee, a charity benefiting children with … Continue reading

The Land of Excuses

I have been at this parenting thing for long enough that you can pretty well imagine I’ve heard just about every excuse in the book. I keep thinking that eventually my kids will just give up. They too will realize that I’ve heard it all and seen it all and not even bother to offer up their ongoing feeble excuses—but, so far, that has not been the case. I have heard excuses for why messes didn’t get cleaned up or homework finished, as well as excuses for why so-and-so can’t help, make it home by curfew, etc. While I pride … Continue reading

Last Minute Gift Ideas For Your Co-Workers—Good Eats

In a previous blog I listed some gift ideas you don’t want to bestow upon your office mates. Then I wrote a blog about some gift ideas that may be welcomed with open arms. I received a comment from a reader about one of my favorites—FOOD! The reader and I both agree that when it comes to last minute gift ideas edible treats are the way to go. After all, according to retail analysts, food is a hot commodity this holiday season. What’s more, everybody eats, so how can you go wrong? That said; if you are still hunting for … Continue reading

Gift Ideas For Co-Workers

What do a stuffed rattlesnake, a stained potholder, a bag of frozen potatoes, a statute of Cher, and a partridge in a pear tree have in common? Okay, nix the bird in the tree, and you’ve got the makings of a list of the oddest gifts given to co-workers by fellow co-workers during office present swaps. According to a recent survey of 250 advertising and marketing executives, the most off-the-wall office gifts tend to raise questions about the givers holiday spirit. No kidding. We went through an entire list of them in my previous blog, but I failed to mention … Continue reading

Office Gifts Gone WILD!

Tonight is my company’s holiday party. I should say former company’s holiday party. Prior to becoming a stay-at-home mom I worked at this particular station for nearly a decade (that’s an eternity in the television news business). Since I still do some freelance work for them I do receive invitations to the occasional party. However, since I am so behind on my holiday to-do list I opted to stay home this year. Which means I will be missing out on the big gift swap. (It’s like a pseudo-Secret Santa). It really is meant to provide a good laugh more than … Continue reading

Friday Fitness Funnies – These Excuses Don’t Fly

Fridays are a great part of the week – they are the day we kick back and relax and try to wind up our week on a positive note. When we’ve skipped our workouts at some point during the week, we’ll start to feel a bit of nagging guilt because whether we had good excuses for missing the workout or not – we feel guilt for having missed a day. For example, I’ve missed every one of my workouts this week and I know that my excuses were valid – my husband is recovering from major surgery and sleeping a … Continue reading

Do You Go Into Work When You Are Sick?

If you are the type of employee that drags yourself into the office no matter how sick you are I have news for you—your boss and colleagues would rather you didn’t. Don’t believe me? A new survey found 56% of employers say that “presenteeism” — when sick employees show up for work — is a problem for them. The reason: sick employees can weaken the corporate bottom line. If you are sick, stay home. That’s the message employers’ are sending to their ill employees. According to the survey, people reporting for work not only have a lower rate of productivity, … Continue reading
