What are Blogs?

Blogs have only been around for the last little while. They first appeared in 1993, gained a little in popularity in 1997, but in 1999 they really took off. Today, it’s estimated that two new blogs are created every second, with 1.6 million postings a day, which come out to 18.6 posts per second. Yes, I’m sure I contribute to that. . . A blog is an online journal, so to speak. It’s a site where you collect your thoughts and ideas and post them for others to see. Most blogs are informal, while others are professional. Let’s take a … Continue reading

So Much for Being “Boss-Free”

My new boss is a tyrant. She is bossy and demanding. While she stands less than four feet tall (including her piggy-tails) she is quite intimidating. In a previous post, I talked about how much I enjoyed working from home because I enjoy being independent and “boss-free“. Well, I am starting to realize that I am not actually boss-less, I simply switched from one type of boss to another. My new boss is three years old. She tells me when I should work, and when it is time to play. The other day, she even chastised me for drinking too … Continue reading

Blogging Your Baby

In 2005, I received a beautiful journal, complete with leather covering, as a Christmas present from my wife. She bought it for me because I mentioned that I wanted to write a bit about my experiences as a father and have a conversation with my daughter. I did not begin to make entries until May of 2006, and they were sporadic at best. Then within a month or two I had stopped completely. I stared at it every day on my dresser, but the guilt was not enough to pick it up and write. How lazy can I possibly be? … Continue reading

Should You Start a Direct Sales Blog?

I love blogging. In fact, I am addicted to it. I actually learned how to blog a little over a year ago and was hooked the moment I wrote my first post. As I was learning how to blog, I was also leading an direct sales organization of over three-hundred consultants. I spent much of my time dreaming of ways that I could use a blog to communicate with my downline teams, customers, potential recruits and hostesses. Unfortunately, my company had a policy which restricted any form of online advertising so I wasn’t able to put my ideas into action. … Continue reading

A Few Things That I Love About Being Home Based (Part 2): Hanging Out With My Dog

Alright, surely you are reading this post thinking, “well, Traci has finally lost her noodle”. Give me some credit…stay just a bit longer, and hear me out. I am married to a K9 Handler for our county’s Sheriff’s Department. Four days per week, he takes my dog to work with him. As a dog-lover myself, I’ve always been a bit jealous of him. How great would it be to have a job where you get to hang out with your best friend all day? Of course, I could have easily titled this blog, “A Few Things That I Love About … Continue reading

Direct Sales – Are You Really in Business “For Yourself and By Yourself”?

When I joined my first direct sales company five years ago, I fell in love with the marketing catch-phrase the companies often use. “Be in Business for Yourself, and by Yourself”. As a “newbie” consultant, the sales pitch was on-target. I never felt like I had a boss, or that I was accountable to everyone. As someone who thrives on flexibility and freedom, I was instantly hooked. As my business and team began to grow, I received a call one day. “Hi, this is ‘Judy’, I will be your Sales Manager from this point forward.” “My manager?” My stomach did … Continue reading

How to Keep the Idea Well Primed, Part One

This is part of an ongoing series about becoming a blogger for Families.com. If you missed the beginning of it, please check it out here. Yesterday, I talked about the magical moment you’ve been waiting for: Getting hired by Lisa! As I explained yesterday, there is usually a waiting period between when you get hired and when you start posting the blogs, though, which is the perfect time to stockpile blogs. Many people apply for a topic because they love it, but once they get hired, they get overwhelmed with the thought of having to write about this same topic … Continue reading

Is it Time to Start Planning for Summer?

It is freezing outside and it has been for over a week. My kids are going crazy and I am suffering from a severe case of cabin fever myself. My tables are covered with paint, play dough, googly eyes, toilet paper rolls, beads and other odds and ends I’ve thrown in front of my kids to keep them from destroying my home. All day, I kept thinking, “I wish it was summertime”. I have fond memories of last summer when we played outside most of the morning. My kids were completely worn out by noon (and so was I) so … Continue reading

Show me the Money, Honey!

Otherwise known as “What You Will Make as a Families.com Blogger”… I am writing a mini-series on how to become a Families.com blogger, and what the benefits are to being one. If you missed the beginning of the series, feel free to start reading it here. If you just missed yesterday’s blog, you can find it here. Okay, so I held off discussing the money portion of this job because I figured if I told you what you would make as a blogger up front, you would say, “Great, I’ll just apply and skip the rest of this stuff!” And … Continue reading
