Homeschool Seminars

You’ve probably heard about homeschool seminars, possibly even some taking place in your area. Are they really worthwhile? Can they really help you? A homeschool seminar can be valuable to you in the following ways: You can connect with other homeschoolers in your area and feel the support that comes from being one of many in a crowd, instead of one weird person on your street. You can take classes to get new ideas in areas where you might be feeling in a rut. You can strengthen your skills in areas where you might not feel the most creative or … Continue reading

Should You Take a Spring Break from Fitness?

You didn’t really read this thinking I was going to suggest you take a break, did you? When I arrived to teach my fitness class this morning I learned that the facility had not scheduled classes due to Spring Break. That got me thinking, should we take a break? I do think it is important that you keep your routine fresh. Also, it is important to make sure that you don’t overtrain. I always suggest at least one day of rest and staggering days of resistance and cardio training. I don’t advise though, taking an actual break. Once you stop … Continue reading

Prenatal Fitness: Water Aerobics

Regular exercise during pregnancy has many benefits. Women who exercise throughout their pregnancies tend to have fewer complications, find relief from many of the discomforts of pregnancy, gain less weight during pregnancy and lose the weight easier after the baby is born. Before starting any exercise program, check with your health care provider. When choosing a method of exercise, low impact is best. For example, a brisk walk outside or on a treadmill is better than running. Swimming is a low impact form of exercise that works the muscles. Water aerobics takes the benefits of swimming one step further. If … Continue reading

Taking Advantage of Fall’s Cool Weather

With kids headed back to school this week cooler temps are right around the corner. But instead of shedding a tear as summer slips away consider embracing the cool, crisp air and using it to aid your fall workouts. Autumn is a treat for the senses: There’s a nip in the air, colorful leaves coat trees (or crunching under your shoes), and the smell of fresh apple pies cooling on people’s windowsills fill the air. It’s an ideal time of the year to exercise outdoors. Think about it; you don’t have to worry about the humidity and bugs, and you … Continue reading

Anticipate Where You’ll Be when You Come Out of Your Funk

I know that sometimes we cannot see the forest for the trees and just getting up in the morning and getting in the shower is a huge accomplishment. But during those times when you are feeling low or depressed or not sure what you are trying to do—it can help to anticipate that you WILL come out of the funky space you are in and if you keep moving while you are feeling down, you’ll be better able to step back into your life when you are ready. This can be an interesting life lesson to learn and one that … Continue reading

How to Plan Like a Pro

It’s one thing to tell people to plan their workout and their exercise programs. It’s another thing to know how to do it. I know this is one of the most common questions I get – how do I make a plan that will work? How do you fit the schedule in with everything else that’s going on? Let’s talk about that so we can learn to plan like a pro. How To Do It Start by making a list of all the things you have to do. Put these things into three categories. The first category is all the … Continue reading

Attending College and Living Peacefully with Your Parents

In a previous article, I discussed the results of a study that concluded that college freshmen living at home with their parents had a better mental health than those that did not live with their parents. So you are going to college and living at home? Your mental health is great right? Not necessarily. While enjoying the privacy of your own room and bathroom and not forking out for living expenses, your parents may be driving you crazy! College is an adjustment without factoring in living arrangements. You have graduated from high school and you feel independent. So how do … Continue reading

Students Driving to School

I can remember the dreaded horror of beginning my freshmen year by riding ‘the big yellow dog’, as high school students typically called it at the time. In my day, it was in no form cool to ride the bus to school. Fortunately, I had an older cousin attending and driving to the same high school, and I could catch a ride to school with her. Driving to school was the cool thing to do. Now as a parent, I am shocked at the many privileges and freedoms that children, including myself, were and still are given. I was a … Continue reading

On the Weight Watchers Wagon…Again: Day 1

It’s now 8:55pm so I think I can safely say I made it through my first day back on the Weight Watchers wagon, and by all accounts it was a success. Early this morning I got out my new journal and wrote today’s date, ready to start anew. It’s quite inspiring, taking out the clean, white journal with nothing written in it, no slip ups or splurges recorded, you still have your total Point allotment that day; it is as if you are born again. (Well, I’m guessing about that one as I am Jewish, but you get the point). … Continue reading
