Juggling Working and Homeschooling

Homeschooling is a full time job. However, it doesn’t pay the bills so often homeschooling parents both have to work. Living on one income was a sacrifice many homeschoolers made in the name of educating their children at home. It was the “price” of homeschooling. However, in today’s economy living on one income with the cost of homeschooling is becoming increasingly more difficult. In many homes the parent responsible for homeschooling is getting a job or starting a business. Adding a job or business to homeschooling a family can be overwhelming and throw things off track. How do you cope? … Continue reading

Become a Home Consumer Tester and Get Free Products

One way to stretch your budget on the household items that you use is to become a consumer tester. You’ll get free products and usually a small payment besides. When my oldest child was our only baby, I did some consumer testing for a couple of companies. Basically, I would receive unmarked products in the mail, test them out and then fill out a survey with my observations and comments. After the survey was submitted, I would receive a small check in the mail for my time. Plus I got to keep the products that I tested and put them … Continue reading

Networking over the Internet

Many of us think of networking as something we do by going somewhere—a party or a professional meeting. In this day and age, we can actually network to promote and build our home businesses without ever leaving our homes. Networking with others via the Internet is becoming an increasingly popular and effective way to broaden and build businesses. With all of the social networking sites as well as sites like Twitter available to anyone and everyone, it makes sense for even a small business owner to learn how to network over the internet. While networking over the Internet can have … Continue reading

Waiting in the World of Home Businesses

Do you remember that old saying that some situations call for “hurry up and wait”? Sometimes, operating a home business can be a perfect example of living in a state of hurry up and wait. A person can feel like she’s slogging along with a lot of things to do, but nothing is happening. Patience, and the ability to live with the wait can be quite important in the world of home business. Try to remind yourself that just because it SEEMS as though nothing is happening, it doesn’t actually mean that nothing is happening. If you are working steadily … Continue reading

Staying on Track While Working From Home

In yesterday’s blog, I wrote how difficult it was for me to focus when I was at home all day long. When I first decided to stay home and study full-time so I could graduate and get a job as a medical transcriptionist (MT) I thought I was studying incredibly long hours. It was only after a couple of months of making very little progress in my studies that I realized that I was wiling away most of my day in forums or e-mailing people or cleaning the house or whatever else sidetracked me that day. I did several things … Continue reading

How Many Hours Are You Truly Working?

When I first decided that I wanted to work from home so I could stay home with our children when we had them (that still hasn’t happened, actually) I decided to become a medical transcriptionist (MT) because that was what I read about in an ad in the newspaper one Sunday. Not really the best reason for choosing a career path, but at the time, it made sense to me. I quit my day job and went to school full-time so I could graduate quickly and start working right away as an MT. My husband was very impressed with my … Continue reading

Ways to Turn Off the “Time Wasters”

Today, there are many people who work from home. There are freelancers whose entire career consists of working from home. The best way to ensure productivity while you are working from home is to turn off the “time wasters”. Before you can do that, you must identify the things that are slowing you down. Social Media Social media can be tricky for freelancers. Writers and bloggers are often working on assignments that require them to write about the “hot topic” of the day. Social media, especially Twitter, has become the go-to for the latest news. The goal is to find … Continue reading

Let the Summer Travel Chaos Begin

Ready… set… travel. Friday kicks off the start of the summer travel season. Where are you planning to spend Memorial Day weekend? According to AAA, nearly 35 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the long holiday weekend, a slight increase over last year. Interestingly, even with the exorbitant price of gas, AAA is predicting that more than 30 million people plan to drive to their vacation destination. That means roughly nine out of ten holiday travelers will take to the nation’s roadways during the Memorial Day weekend. If you are planning to travel with kids, … Continue reading

Pros and Cons to Elliptical Machines

I am a pretty big of my elliptical machine. I have a NordicTrack, found at most exercise stores and department stores that carry exercise equipment (such as Sears). Although the elliptical machines are one of my favorite workout machines, like with any machine, there are pros and cons. Pros One pro to an elliptical, whether at the gym or at your home, is that it is an indoor workout. Indoor workouts are convenient when the weather outside is less than desirable. Indoor workouts can also be safer. Instead of running outside where you have to deal with terrain, the elliptical … Continue reading

Mid-year Goals

I am in total shock that it is already August. Where did this year go? In a couple months the fall and winter holidays begin and before we know it, it will be 2012! Pondering this on a drive home from my camping trip last week, I decided to make some mid-year goals to help me get back on track. Earlier in the summer when my teaching job ended, I got back into major workout mode with spinning class, hiking 2-3 times a week, elliptical at least twice a week, etc. However, with some stress and other factors that creeped … Continue reading
