Some Strategies For Job Seekers Over Fifty

No matter how old anyone is, without a life plan or strategy, the path to success becomes as cluttered as one's attic. Searching for a job can be very time-consuming and exhaustive, but it can be impossible if you don't have a plan of action. Consider these following steps for your particular path along the way to success.

First of all, get a clear picture of your financial status and face the truth, no matter how bad it may be. In the words of Dr. Phil, "you can't change what you don't acknowledge." This will help in determining the parameters within which you will be making job decisions, including whether work will be full-time or part-time. Get a current resume together, focusing on the benefits you can offer an employer. Omit any job experience that does not enhance you on paper. Consider temp work. It may not lead to full time employment, but it could mean steady work.

Learn how to network even if you are shy and have never done it before. It's like learning how to swim and cannot be done without getting your feet wet. Think of all the people you know:there are probably more than you even realize. Keep in touch and share your interests. You never know what can come out of it.

Explore your local resources. Go to the library and check out its career-related resources. Everything is free and librarians are always on hand and eager to help. Check out the local newspapers and agencies. Leave no local stone unturned in your quest for a new job. (Make your quest, in fact, a job unto itself.)

Wherever you go and whomever you speak to, project the three "Es". These are energy, experience and enthusiasm. Avoid talking about the good old days because they are gone with the wind along with Tara and Scarlet and Rhett.
