Florida Makes it Difficult to Get Unemployment Benefits

Florida has been making it extra difficult for people to receive unemployment insurance benefits. The state has created a series or procedural changes that appear to be designed specifically to prevent eligible people from receiving unemployment benefits. A complaint about this has been filed to the United States Department of Labor. No one wants to be unemployed. It is incredibly stressful to not have any idea how you are going to pay your bills and keep your family fed. Unemployment Insurance benefits are supposed to provide financial assistance to qualified people who have lost their jobs due to no fault … Continue reading

One in Three Young Adults With Autism are Unemployed

A recent study shows that one out of every three young adults who have autism lack employment, and have no college or technical education. Improvements need to be made in the systems that support young adults that have autism, in order to address this issue. Ideally, parents want their children to grow up to be self-sufficient members of society. A recent study found that, in some ways, this isn’t what is happening with many young adults who have autism. Researchers found that one in three young adults who have an autism spectrum disorder is unemployed, and that they had no … Continue reading

Does Your Work Acknowledge Your Worth

Yesterday I had a conversation with my husband that was a bit disheartening. We were in the car, on our way home from vacation. It was a long ride, and it did not take long for the baby to fall asleep. We were free to enjoy some adult conversation, which is a very good thing since we do not often have that opportunity. We talked about a lot of things and at some point, the conversation turned to the topic of work. As you know, I am a stay at home mom and I have a couple of home-based businesses. … Continue reading

Unemployed Parents Get Creative to Feed Kids

When it comes to keeping children well fed, clothed and in a home with running water and electricity, most parents will probably tell that they’ll do whatever it takes. “Whatever it takes” is exactly what an unemployed father from Austin, Texas is doing to keep his kids in the only home they’ve ever known. Loren Guerra says he was forced to get creative when he was recently given a pink slip from his employer. However, instead of trying to earn money by flipping burgers at his local fast-food joint or taking a job as a bus driver, Guerra decided to … Continue reading

Should You Work for a Small or Large Company?

This is often a tough decision to make when you are job hunting. Is it better to be the big fish in a small pond or a small fish in the big pond? Both small and large companies have advantages and disadvantages. The key is to evaluate them both for your individual situation, skills and personality, in order to find the best fit. Smaller companies provide an opportunity to feel a part of the organization. They often allow for more variety in your job, as most employees do multiple tasks and often even multiple positions. A smaller company can present … Continue reading

I Have No Education–I Cannot Get a Job

Yesterday, I wrote a blog about people wanting the perfect job who don’t have any special talents, training, or skills. I said that everyone has to bring something to the table by giving some reason for the employer to hire you, and I also said that people should get a job that they’re passionate about. I realized last night as I was getting ready for bed that I was dispensing general advice, with no concrete links to follow or advice to follow up on. Tomorrow, I am going to show how I would tackle specific (made up) scenarios of mothers … Continue reading

Tips: Getting Kids To Follow Directions and Ask for Help

Sometimes as a parent it’s frustrating to tell your child to do something only to find out that they didn’t follow directions. Many times they didn’t follow directions because they weren’t listening in the first place. To make sure Tyler follows directions I employ a technique I found in a workbook, Common Sense Parenting, by Raymond Burke and Ronald Herron. The workbook is great and it’s actually a teaching tool employed by teachers at Boys Town. But all of the information in the workbook can be used in any family setting. Here’s what they have to say about following directions: … Continue reading

Special Education After High School is Elusive

Parents of children who have special needs realize that their parenting responsibilities will not end when their child becomes eighteen. Unfortunately, the education system may not have that same understanding. Programs for adults with special needs are the first to go when cuts must be made. Children who have special needs are able to receive at least some of the services that they require while they attend school. Many of these services are things that public schools are required to provide for students who need certain types of services. Schools that can’t provide for the needs of an individual child … Continue reading
