Extreme Cheapskates on TLC

Have you watched that TLC show, “Extreme Cheapskates?” There is a lot you can learn about frugal living from it, but the question is, how much of it is good? TLC is an extreme phase. “Extreme Couponers” was doing well, and now they need to turn the shock value up a little more. As the producers of an exploitative show such as “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” this shouldn’t be a surprise. You know that you are mostly going to get played for entertainment and not actually learn much anything on The Learning Channel. Oh maybe there will be a … Continue reading

Frugal and Natural Home Remedies

I love natural home remedies for everything from coming down with a cold to stomach cramps. These natural remedies can be pretty inexpensive, too. The next time you need to heal, grab the solution right from your own pantry. Chances are that you already have everything that you need on hand. Starting a Cold Who doesn’t dread that classic tickle in your throat, the swollen feeling that tells you that you are about to come down with a cold? To sooth inflamed tissues, loosen mucus before it takes hold and flush out irritants or bacteria that can make you sick, … Continue reading

In Memoriam 2011 – Part 1

Each year, we lose beloved stars, athletes, authors, and pop culture figures and 2011 was no exception. Here’s a few of those that died in 2011: January 2011 If you are a Rocky Horror Picture Show fan, you no doubt remember the line “Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet” from Science Fiction/Double Feature, the opening ode to great sci-fi films of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Francis, who also was the star of the television show “Honey West” died on January 3 at age 80 due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Gerry Rafferty made his name with hits such as “Baker … Continue reading

Marry Now, Celebrate Later, Save Money and Your Marriage?

Why do we make such a big deal about weddings? More specifically, why do we spend so much on weddings? The Average Price of a Wedding I stumbled across a site called Cost of Wedding that says the average price of a wedding in the United States is between $14,000 and $43,000. (You can also enter your zip code on this site to find out what the average cost of a wedding is in your immediate area.) This figure accounted for everything except: the engagement ring, bridal consultant or wedding planner (if any), bridal shower invitations, gifts from guests, honeymoon, … Continue reading

Meals Most of Us WON’T Be Dining on at 35,000 Feet

A new study shows that today’s average first-class, round-trip ticket costs $13,000. (So basically you could buy a compact car or fly in luxury for a day.) For that amount of money you are not guaranteed a delay-free flight or one that is void of turbulence. Heck, for $13,000 the airline can’t even promise that your luggage will arrive at your final destination in one piece. However, what you are guaranteed in first class is a four-star meal. Champagne, caviar, lobster—-you name it. These days the sky is the limit when it comes to dining on fancy food in first … Continue reading

What Equipment is “Nice to Have” as a Medical Transcriptionist?

This blog is part of a series on transcription. If you haven’t read the other blogs in this series, make sure to check out the summary page for a listing of all transcription blogs. I discussed the basics needed to become a medical transcriptionist here. Once you get going as an MT and start making money, you may find that you are more profitable if you invest in some equipment above and beyond the absolute bare minimums. Sometimes these extras are required when getting hired on with a medical transcription company, but usually they are just strongly encouraged, not required. … Continue reading

Weekend Wanderings: Honey I Shrunk the Solar System

I’m back to bring you another Weekend Wandering that I took my daughter on, it’s a week late, but this time last week I was at the hospital for surgery and I wasn’t quite up to my usual par for typing. But as I detailed in my first weekend wandering, my daughter and I are now trying to spend our weekends on adventuring through our local area and discovering the hidden treasures that are hosted by our city. Honey I Shrunk the Solar System For this particular weekend wandering, we took a drive out to the University of Texas at … Continue reading

A Few Things That I Love About Being Home Based (Part 3): My Income = My Efforts

Prior to becoming a work-at-home mom, I worked for the state government as a social worker. One of my biggest pet-peeves of that job was that my income never seemed to equal my efforts. Every morning, I would arrive at work promptly at eight a.m. (Okay, 8:15 at the latest…). As I shuffled through my caseload in an attempt to plan my day, I watched as one co-worker after an another would arrive. “Jane” walked in at 8:30, followed by “Bob” at 9:00 and then “Jim” would often make his grand entrance nearly an hour later. Frankly, it always bothered … Continue reading

Junior Bloggers at Families.com

This series started last week with me talking about how to apply to Families.com to become a blogger for them. This week I have been covering what happens once you actually get hired. And today, I wanted to talk about being a Junior Blogger. When you’re a junior blogger, it’s all rather nerve-wracking. You are reading the Handbook every day, trying to find the answers to your questions, you are pestering Lisa for the answers you can’t find, and you’re feeling just a little bit stupid. Don’t worry, this too will pass. Not the stupid part if you’re anything like … Continue reading
