Should You Continue at One Job While Searching for Another?

A common dilemma is whether to search for a new job while still working at the old, or to quit completely before you start to look. This can be a tricky problem, as both ways have their advantages and disadvantages.

Overall, there isn't necessarily one way that is the best. It is more about determining how each option affects your individual situation. Let's discuss some of the pros and cons of each.

Keep working:

Pros:

1. You can maintain a steady source of income.

2. You don't have to explain why you aren't working.

Cons:

1. Trying to find the time to interview and apply to jobs as well as working a full time job is a challenge.

Quit working:

Pros:

1. You can devote all your time to your job hunt. Therefore, you can often reduce the process it might take to find a new job.

2. Being able to escape from a bad job can boost your confidence and help you present yourself better in an interview.

Cons:

1. You may be strapped for cash or dig into an emergency savings account if you don't have a source of income.

2. You may feel pressured to take a job due to needing the income vs. finding the right job.

3. You will have to explain why you are currently unemployed.

In general, it can be easier to quit a current job and then go looking for a new one. Getting out of a negative work environment can help boost your ego and help you shine in an interview situation. It will also free up the time to devote to your hunt, as looking for a new job can often be a full time job in itself.

However, while it may be easier to quit - it isn't really better. The loss of income can create stress and pressure to find something quickly. You will also have to explain why you quit and for some managers that can send up a red flag.

Weigh your unique situation against these advantages and disadvantages to come up with the best solution for you.
