Probably the one area in most need of workers in today's workforce is in computers, software, and database administrations. There is no indication this need will disappear anytime soon. Larger companies have a whole department devoted to Information Systems or Technology (IS or IT Departments) while the smaller ones tend to hire contractors. Either way, if you are considering a job for the future, this is definitely one to look at.

Samples of jobs in this field include:

• Computer Programmers • Systems Analysts • Computer Engineers • Database Administrators • Computer Support Specialists • Computer Scientist

The demand for these jobs and those like them has been doubling every ten years since the early 1980s. This category is classified as one of the fastest growing job sectors for the next ten years as well.

The other advantage of this type of career path is the ability to work in almost any industry. High tech careers are no longer limited to larger technology companies; all businesses need at least a few computer specialists on staff. This flexibility allows the worker variety in where they can live or work. It can also make it easier for someone with a background in one type of industry to take some classes in information technology and allow them to move up the career ladder with ease.

IT jobs are also the types of positions where a recent graduate has as much clout as a veteran. With the constantly changing field of technology, even experienced computer engineers have to maintain their skills with new courses and classes. No doubt, it is definitely a career that requires coursework, often a bachelors degree or higher. Some may find entry-level opportunities with a few years of community college work that start about half of the standard salary range.

According to PayScale.com, the average starting salary for those in this field is about $58,000 to $84,000... not bad!
