Ways to Savor Summer Nights

While some parents are busy belting out “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” I am desperately trying to squeeze as much outdoor fun into what’s left of my daughter’s summer break. Classes resume next week and neither one of us is ready to say so long to the season. My family spends a ton of time outside during the summer months, and this year has been no exception, despite the record-breaking heat. Now that the new school year is about to start, we are trying to get in as many outdoor adventures as possible. Since I telecommute, I … Continue reading

Business Idea – Interior Design or Decorating

Everyone wants a home that looks inviting and well styled. Sometimes, people can not find the time or the right pieces to create the nicely decorated home that they want to have. Interior designers and decorators help homeowners to create homes that feel as beautiful as they look. They work with their clients to translate their personal styles into the style of their living space. The best part is, many of them do it from the comfort of their own homes. You may wonder if there is a difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator. There is, and … Continue reading

Are Work at Home Parents Making Their Kids Sick?

A week into the new school year and my kindergartner gets sick. Fever, sore throat, body aches, the works. Not the swine flu, but still, pretty bad. I felt terrible. She had just gotten into a routine, she met new friends and liked her teacher. Then, BAM! She’s bedridden for two days. Sharing the news with one of my best friends certainly didn’t make me feel any better. My pal implied that my home office could have triggered my daughter’s illness. Highly unlikely, but her words were food for thought. In addition to working as a freelance news reporter, I … Continue reading

When Should My Child Have His First Dental Visit?

Yesterday I spent the morning at the park with my youngest kids, another mom and her child. As I was trying to navigate pushing two swings on opposite sides of the swing set and avoid getting hit by all of the swings in the middle, my mom friend asked me a good question. “Do you think he is too young to see a dentist?” Her child was three-years old and hadn’t yet been to the dentist. There was an issue with his teeth that she was concerned about, but she wasn’t sure if he was too young to be seen … Continue reading

Online Romance Scams

This afternoon Wayne surprised me and came home from work early. Thank goodness I had just woken up from my nap. He’d tease me mercilessly if he found me conked out on the couch. (He thinks that’s what I do all day as it is, which I do sometimes, but not always. But he’d never believe me if he actually caught me in the act.) At any rate, he’d had CPE (Continuing Professional Education) training for half the day. Instead of going in to the office for only a few hours, he opted to skip the drive and come home … Continue reading

Alabama Homeschool Groups and Resources N-Z

Alabama Homeschool Groups and Resources N-Z To succeed in homeschooling, it is in your best interest to get involved with other homeschoolers. You should join a homeschool network or group near you. For this reason, I have decided to give a full listing of homeschooling groups throughout each state. Yes, there are other sites that list homeschool networks and support groups but none of are comprehensive. Some of them only list Christian, others only list those affiliated with them. I will attempt to list all of them. This installment is the last installment for Alabama (N-Z) NAHE (North Alabama Home … Continue reading

“There’s a Hobo at School with a Knife!” More Adventures in Childhood Bipolar Disorder

My husband and I were faced with the horrific task of telling my stepdaughters that their mother, baby sister, and brother-to-be had all been killed in a terrible car accident. As we sat them down that morning, the look of concern on their faces was obvious. They knew something was terribly wrong, just by their father’s demeanor. He was a tough-guy police officer who rarely cried. Yet now he was racked with visible grief. It was hard for him to find the right words. How does a father gently break his daughters’ hearts? With his arms around them, he shared … Continue reading

China’s Airport—What To Expect If You Are Going To The Olympics

Beijing Capital International Airport… it may not be a place many Americans are familiar with. But, by this time next year millions of world-class athletes along with their friends, family members, and fans of the Olympic games will have spent at least a few hours in it. Namely in the newest portion of it—Terminal 3. According to city officials, when the massive steel and glass structure opens to the public early next year it will be among the world’s largest airport terminals. Not only will it be one of the biggest, but it will also be one of the most … Continue reading

Unsealing An Envelope And Other Frugal Mail Tricks

Have you ever sealed up an envelope only to realize that you forgot something, such as signing a check or including a rebate form? Normally you would have to open it up, and throw the used envelope away, right? Well here is a handy trick that you can use to save that envelope. Just put it into the freezer for a few hours. Take it out and then run a knife under the flap. It should pop open very easily. The glue will still be good, so you can seal it right back up again. This will also work with … Continue reading

Mackie’s Tale

Today is National Homeless Animals Day, which was instituted by the International Society for Animal Rights. The ISAR will celebrate today with many organized candle vigils, but I’m going to do something a little different. For your enjoyment, here’s a short story I wrote based on a true story –that of my real life dog Mackie. Buster Beginnings I started life as Buster. The early weeks are fuzzy, but I’ve heard tell I came from a litter of five pups. When we turned two months old, we were sold to different homes. My First Home: The Millers My first family … Continue reading
