If you're following this series we've been talking about careers that are on the rise, pay well, and give a high level of job satisfaction. Today we'll talk about a few more on our list.

Editor

Being an editor is a great job because if you have the vision, you have the opportunity to see your work in headlines. However, editing is a demanding job requiring that you have great writing skills, excellent people skills and a blend of diplomacy and aggressiveness for dealing with both publishers and writers. You also have to understand how the publishing business works and while sometimes a college degree is desirable--it's not necessary. The typical path includes assistant editing, a number of assignments and the possibility of promotion. It's a long road to enjoy autonomy in the editing world--but for those who achieve it--it's a great career. The median salary is $52,600.

Engineer

Engineering is among the highest paying jobs that a bachelor's degree can get you. Granted, to be really secure in your job you'll need to do more than a bachelor's degree as many companies are off shoring low level engineering to other countries. You'll also have to have ingenuity along with science & math skills to get you through a 5 or 6 year college degree program. However, engineering offers some pretty neat opportunities if you're in the right place. The median salary is $90,900.

Firefighters

Firefighters, according to a recent survey, love their job. It is truly a profession where you unequivocally make a difference. It also ranks very high on the perceived prestige ladder coming in third after physician and scientist. Of course, it also ranks high on the list of most dangerous jobs as well. Another down side is that you generally spend a few nights a week at the fire house being awoken by middle of the night alarms. Still, it is one of the very few jobs that comes with prestige and great satisfaction without a higher education degree. I am sad to say that the median pay for this job is only $55,000. I wish I could write that it was much higher.
