Stay-At-Home Working Parents, Take Heart

Many home-based professionals and many people that dream of working from home do so because they want to be stay-at-home parents. However, even though being a stay-at-home parent is a rewarding choice, to say the least, it is not without its difficult moments. Some of the difficult things that happen when one or both parents chooses to stay at home are related to finances, trying to earn as much as possible from home and keep expenses as low as possible. These are not the things that trouble me the most. With good communication and a commitment to working together to … Continue reading

Drawing the Line: At-Home Care or the Vet’s Office?

Moose’s recent illness has had me thinking a lot about my judgement as a pet owner. Because Moose often has a sensitive stomach, I often end up treating him at home. This last time, we needed the vet. But did I call for help quickly enough? Could I have saved him (and me) some suffering by calling the vet in sooner? Between writing about pets for more than three years, working at the cats-only boarding and vet, and reading a lot of pet health books, I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of what’s an emergency and what … Continue reading

Stay-at-Home Moms are Priceless

Actually, they’re worth about $123,000 if you believe Salary.com’s latest calculations. Yes, all you dads, who constantly berate your spouse’s decision to give up her career in the “real world” and make child raising her priority, I have news for you: Stay-at-home moms are worth six figures. Way more, if you ask the children they pour their hearts and souls into raising, but I digress. Salary.com has once again tried to put a price tag on the tasks stay-at-home moms accomplish in a year’s time. Have you ever wondered how much moms should really be raking in? According to the … Continue reading

My Healthy New Year’s Resolutions

This past year has been full of big changes for me. The biggest one was my cross-country move. I am no longer one of the primary caretakers for my grandmother — the only person I have to take care of is myself. Well, myself and the dogs. But now that it’s just me, I have to confess that I’ve gotten somewhat lazy when it comes to my own care. Here are the things I’d like to do in 2008 for better health: Walk more. Yes, I walk the dogs at least four times each day, but it’s not the same … Continue reading

Stay Motivated!

Motivation is a primary element of a successful weight loss program. When your alarm clock goes off in the morning and you’re torn between an extra hour of sleep or a workout, motivation is what gets you out of bed. When the girls at the office get together during Happy Hour for drinks and fried finger foods, motivation to lose weight is what makes you say “No, thanks”. Following are a few links to some great blogs about staying motivated on your weight loss journey. For a full list of blogs on staying motivated click here. Do Office Printers Pose A Health Risk?

A recent study from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia says that office printers could be as dangerous to the lungs as cigarette smoking! The researchers tested dozens of laser printers and found that some of them emit what they consider to be dangerous levels of ultra-fine toner particles into the air. These ultra-fine particles can cause lasting damage to the lungs, according to researchers. They say the health effects can vary based on what the ultra-fine particles are composed of, and that resulting problems can range from respiratory irritation to severe cardiovascular problems and even cancer. The tests … Continue reading

Stomach Virus Spread at Disney’s Wild Africa Trek

The provided snack In the past couple of years the spate of food poisoning cases on cruise ships put a big “health alert” smirch on the often laid-back and envied vacation. This year, however, Disney World might be taking that dubious crown. At least, the Wild Africa Trek at the Animal Kingdom could. NBC News reports that several dozen people became sick at the beginning of June, and the primary link between them was that they’d all gone on the Wild Africa Trek right around the same time. The safari-style tour, that takes guests to parts of the park usually … Continue reading

Leave Your Kids at Home

Recently there was a story in the news about a mother who is accused of putting her five year old daughter in a tanning bed. I don’t know if this woman is guilty or not but she certainly is fond of tanning. As a single mother I’ve had to take Hailey lots of places that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. When I went to the emergency room, not only did she go with me, she had to drive me, with only a learners permit because I was in too much pain to drive myself. I will never forget how frightened … Continue reading
