How to Choose a Jobby Debbie Vasen | More from this Blogger 19 Jun 2008 10:28 AM Are you still contemplating the question, "what are you going to do when you grow up?" Trust me, many of us are. Whether you are fresh in your career or simply sitting back and reflecting on where life has taken you, the question of which job is best can arise. How do you determine which is the best job? There are so many variables and so many personal preferences that this is not an easy chore. The key is to find something that really gets your juices flowing, a career that motivates you and gets you up each morning. No job will be satisfying every day, but you want your career to be offer more days of reward than strife. The other reminder is that you don't have to stay in just one job forever. Don't be afraid to try something new. If it doesn't work out, you can switch it up later. Just be sure to give it at least 12 months to decide if it is a good fit. Now, how to begin? Start by laying out all your current interests and opportunities on the table. Spend some time brainstorming about different types of jobs or careers. Then narrow it down to a few that seem the most enticing. Get a notebook and put each one of those career types as a title on each page. Under each of your desired careers, start making a list of the following: • Pros and cons • Salary • Education, licensing and experience required • Potential employers • Locations of jobs • Job environment • Other factors.... The key is to identify what you might need to do to get this job as well as the different impacts to your lifestyle each job will bring. After this exercise, you should have a clearer idea of a few jobs to pursue. Then, get out there and start applying.
