Encore: Q&A of a Working QA, Part Two

If you missed Part One, check it out here.

Again, here's Laura, a working MT and QA gal:

Do you work full-time or part-time, and why?

I work full time because I need full-time pay. We have a tiered system where the higher your line counts, the higher your rate of pay is. Working full time allows me to reach the higher line counts and the higher pay scale.

What is the best part of being an MT and/or QA?

The best part of being an MT is the freedom. My current job allows me to be at home without a set schedule for most days of the week (the two days I do QA, I have more of a set schedule). The ability to run out and do errands during the day or to just take a nap is a great perk. I also do not miss the office politics, the traffic, the cost of gas, the office clothes, etc.

And conversely, what is the worst part of being an MT and/or QA? The worst part of being an MT without a set schedule is the fact that sometimes I have to force myself to work on days when I don't feel like working. Not having a set schedule means I can work whenever I want, but sometimes I have to really buckle down and be very self-disciplined. If I take too much time off in the mornings, I find myself working into the evenings trying to get my work done. Time can slip away very quickly when you're at home!
